SKIN BENEFITS OF MUSHROOMS

Sep 07, 2023

Mushrooms can help the overall health and appearance of your skin. They have the ability to draw water into the skin and are rich in fatty acids that help to retain moisture and maintain the skin barrier.

Incorporating mushrooms in your skincare routine can help in a number of ways such as:

  • Boosting collagen production
  • Providing antioxidant protection for skin
  • Brightening the skin
  • Hydrating and moisturizing the skin
  • Providing anti-aging benefits
  • Providing anti-inflammatory benefits
  • Balancing pH levels
  • Reducing breakouts
  • Being a source of vitamin D

  1. The Snow Mushroom (Tremella Fuciformis) - supports the production of collagen, a structural protein that gives skin volume and density. Antioxidant properties neutralize free radicals, which promote skin cell regeneration. This preservation of collagen levels in the skin also delays signs of aging and helps heal various wounds. It’s even been labeled as the next hyaluronic acid for its hydrating properties, but the particles are smaller than hyaluronic acid, so it penetrates the skin more easily making it a better option. This mushroom is also rich in Vit A, which mimics retinol, a great exfoliator.
  2. Shaggy Mane Mushroom (Coprinus Comatus) - protects skin health and can help reduce dryness and sensitivity.
  3. Cordyceps Sinensis - This fungus has anti-inflammatory properties and provides rich moisture to the skin. It also possesses antioxidants, which can help fight free radicals - known for their role in contributing to signs of aging
  4. Reishi Mushroom (Ganoderma Lucidum) - can help lessen the appearance of redness. They are brilliant anti-aging ingredients - Between restoring skin's glow, reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, and calming the skin, reishi mushrooms are an incredible anti-aging ingredient.
  5. Maitake/Maitaki Mushroom (Grifola Frondosa) - improves the elasticity of our skin and stimulates collagen. It helps improve problems like acne, eczema, and rosacea and protects your skin from discolorations and aging of the skin.

“Mushrooms have a strong antioxidant activity which suggests that they have the ability to cope with oxidative stress promoting ROS generation and acting as skin anti-aging. The extracts revealed antibacterial activity against MSSA and MRSA, which are microorganisms found to colonize the skin during injury and inflammation. After incorporating the extracts into the base cosmetic cream, the mushroom cosmetic formulations still display antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activity by inhibition of NO production and melanin by suppression of tyrosinase activity. Furthermore, the final cosmeceutical formulations containing the mushroom extracts were found to inhibit important bacteria strains responsible for skin damage. These diverse functions displayed by the mushroom extracts—before and after incorporation in the base cream formulations—suggest that mushrooms contain sustainable bioactive compounds that can be the basis of cosmeceutical formulations capable of tackling skin aging, inflammation, and hyperpigmentation.” (PubMed).

Achieving clear, radiant skin is a goal many of us strive for. However, with the constant exposure to environmental pollutants, stress, and a modern diet that may be less than ideal, our skin often bears the brunt of these factors, leading to issues like acne, dullness, and premature aging. This is where the concept of "detoxing" comes into play. While detoxing has become a buzzword in the health and wellness industry, it's important to understand how it can genuinely benefit the appearance of your skin.
